THE BASICS OF LEADERSHIP AT EVERY LEVEL
Funny how things work...when you put in the work. – Major (R) Tony Mayne
As a leader, you have to understand that everybody in your organization is dealing with something. Resilience and work-life balance only work if there are organizational systems and feedback loops to understand that, and leaders make the time to manage/lead that. It’s how organizations grow and become better; it’s what attracts the best people.
Crisis management is a deliberate, thoughtful process that doesn’t mean slow. Focus on what you, as a leader, must focus on- not what others can do. Although it sometimes requires telling people what they should be doing. A big part of that is utilization of resources, which is usually people and delegation. If you have surrounded yourself with the right people, you’ll find you can trust them in a crisis. So you must trust them with the day-to-day. Your communication must be measured, so it’s helpful, not a distraction.
The basics of leadership at every level: treat people as you want to be treated, respect them, and understand you don’t understand them. Lead by example; be consistent, both professionally and personally; they are directly connected. Be accountable, publicly and privately.
