MORE LEADERSHIP THOUGHTS

  • Be the person who solves problems in your organization: strategic, technical, culture.  Not by yourself, but by, with, and through others.  More often leading through the middle, vs from the front.  By that I mean giving credit to others when things go right and taking responsibility when things don’t.  That’s how originations and you grow, “A rising tide lifts all boats”- JFK.

  • Be the leader your organization needs, not the leader you want to be.  Listen to the organization, and they will listen to you.  Have a plan to be the person people want to talk to.  Not because you solve their problems, but because you care enough to try to solve their problems, and sometimes (most of the time) that’s nothing more than communication.  Don’t promise to fix things; promise to provide feedback, and always provide that.  Understanding and then influencing what people in your organization care about is what moves the organization forward.

  • Emotions are a powerful tool.  Not a deliberate tool to pull out, but a tool that must be controlled.  If you don’t control your emotions, you won’t know what the issues and opportunities are in your organization because people won’t want to take the risk with you.  Emotional decisions are always bad; having the humility to walk them back is huge.  Anger is personal, really personal embarrassment of your failures.  Emotional emphasis, demonstrating that you are interested in getting it right, not being right, is powerful
